SIFA 2018 | Tracing the Displaced: Process Insight Talk by Huzir Sulaiman
Playwright Huzir Sulaiman of Checkpoint Theatre is preparing for his 2019 SIFA commission, which has the working title of Displaced Persons' Welcome Dinner. It will be a multidisciplinary theatre piece dealing with the themes of fragility, mortality and faith, and set in the world of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
In this talk, a year before the premiere of this new work, Huzir will lay bare his methods and approaches, from his research findings to the evolution of his ideas. Join us for an invaluable behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of one of Singapore's most lyrical and thought-provoking theatre-makers.
Educated at Princeton and a Yale World Fellow, Huzir works across different media, art forms and genres, telling stories that allow people to access complex ideas in simple, personal, human ways. A co-founder and Joint Artistic Director of the multidisciplinary Checkpoint Theatre, his play The Weight of Silk on Skin opened the Man Singapore Theatre Festival in August 2011 and won Best Original Script at the 2012 Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards. As an arts educator, he teaches playwriting at Singapore-based tertiary institutions and is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the National University of Singapore’s University Scholars Programme.
